"Do you know you're a hero?"

I went to my school’s student government banquet this past Thursday. Have I told you guys how much I love ASB and how happy I am to have been a part of it? Yup, so I’m not really going to say much about the people or the memories. It was, however, great to see the many faces of people I befriended in such a short time. The food was great, and the time spent afterwards taking pictures with just about everyone was just as great.

One thing that really made the banquet was sitting next to my ASB teacher. She started up the conversation asking me how everything was going on since departing from Student Government at the end of the first semester. And then she took me by surprise by basically showering me with compliments. It was beyond sweet, but I felt so awkward because I didn’t know how to respond other than by saying “Uhhh” or “Thank you!” hahaha. I’m still a work in progress when it comes to being open and expressive.

She went on to detail and talked about how unique a life I have. How I have parents that emigrated from Mexico and have limited knowledge of the English language, and how that hasn’t stopped me from achieving all that I have done during my four years of high school. How I took 6 AP exams this year, how I was involved in so many extra curricular activities, how I have a 4.0+ GPA, how she thought I was a terrific student during my time in student government, how I got nominated to the Homecoming Court, and how I (along with my twin brother) will be the first from both sides of my family to go to college were the topics she covered. It was compliment after compliment. And she finished by saying “Most people in your position [excluding family history] would do average at best. You’re very special, and I hope you know that” and “Do you know you’re a hero?”

That hit me so hard I had to take a moment to really think through what she said. At no point did I ever consider myself a hero; I was just doing what I liked to do, regardless of my socioeconomic status. But to have someone tell you that you are an inspiring individual in the eyes of many is something you can’t take so lightly. And as I reached over to hug her, my eyes started to get misty. I quickly fought back the tears, for fear of being caught not only by her, but by any other fellow ASB members. I told you, my process of being more open with my emotions is a work in progress. Those words spoken so sincerely by her have been resonating throughout my head non-stop. It feels so nice and humbling to know that you left a great impression in the eyes of many. Thank you Mama Bair, for that amazing chat we had; I appreciate all that you said from the core of my being.

This is one of the few things I will wear on my graduation outfit in a few days, and it will be one of the accessories I wear with the utmost pride. “HP” stands for “Helping Paws”. I don’t think I even mentioned this wonderful internship that I started at the beginning of the year.

Helping Paws is an internship my school has that offers students to tutor and play with little kids at a nearby elementary school. The elementary school’s demographics comprises of 80% underprivileged children who are on free/reduced lunch and who have parents who struggle financially. That alone made me want to join the program. This is the program’s first year. You can intern while you’re in school or you can go after school. I picked after school, and my commitment to these kids is two times a week, about an hour each day.

Going to that tiny school and helping my little babies out has had such a big impact on me. The kids are so energetic, so fun, so willing to learn, that it only makes the experience worth it. To see the kindergartners smile when they identify the right letter, to see the first graders feel proud of themselves when they add correctly… I get a great kick out of it. And these kiddies remind me so much of myself and my elementary school - its economically disadvantaged state, its small campus, and its drive to provide the best it can offer to its students.

I only have a few more days to see my babies. It’s heartbreaking to think that I won’t see them anymore, but it’s heartwarming to know that the elementary school - its staff, students, and parents - is incredibly grateful for the work the interns like myself put into improving the educational experience of its students. And I’m just as grateful to have been a part of this. After all, they are the future, and I believe one can go far in life no matter what one’s socioeconomic status is.

and I got a solid 4. That pretty much took a load off my shoulders. Now when I head into the exam tomorrow morning, I’ll feel confident in my abilities. After all, for someone like me who didn’t even take the class, getting a 4 is a pretty great thing!
